The Heron and the Serpent
Description
This book is a novel about a melancholy and disbelieving banker, Manuel, who lives between two loves: Albertina and Ana. After a long absence in Africa, when he returns both are married. His life will be involved in a series of problems and issues of honor, emotions and human dramas until Manuel awakens to higher values by surrendering himself to God as a humble servant. Foreword by Guilherme d'Oliveira Martins Francisco Costa, “the only genuinely sintrean writer”, in the words of Miguel Real, was born in Sintra in 1900 and lived there until his death in 1987. He was, for several years, librarian-archivist at the Library Municipal of Sintra. Writer of deep Catholic convictions, he edited poetry and essay books as well as several novels. Of these, we highlight the A heron and the snake (1943), the Eça de Queiroz Prize, and the Incarcerable Incarceration (1949), the Ricardo Malheiros Prize from the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, also published by PAULUS Editora.
