Saint Bartholomew, also known as Nathanael, was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. He was originally from Cana of Galilee and was introduced to Jesus by his friend Philip. According to the Gospel of John, when Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is no deceit."
After the ascension of Jesus, Saint Bartholomew preached the gospel in Armenia, Ethiopia, India and other parts of Asia. He is said to have been martyred by flaying in Albanopolis, Armenia.
The feast of Saint Bartholomew is celebrated on the 24th of August. On this day, Christians remember his life and ministry and thank his example of faithfulness and dedication in spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.
A prayer for Saint Bartholomew's Day:
Almighty and eternal God, who gave your apostle Bartholomew the grace to truly believe and preach your word: Grant that your Church may love what he believed and preach what he taught; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
