Saint Ivo and his commemorative day
Saint Ivo was born in Kermartin, Brittany, in 1253. He grew up in a noble family and was well educated in law and theology. But he felt called to the priesthood and dedicated his life to helping the poor and downtrodden. He became known as a defender of justice and defender of the rights of the underprivileged. His kindness, compassion, and generosity inspired many, and his reputation as a holy man spread far and wide.
On his commemorative date, people from all over the world gather to honor Saint Ivo and ask for his intercession. They pray for justice, fairness and compassion in the world and for guidance in their own lives. They remember St. Ivo's teachings and strive to emulate his virtues of humility, simplicity and selflessness.
A story is told about Saint Ivo that illustrates his compassion and concern for the poor. One day a woman came to him and told him that her husband had been arrested and thrown into prison for a debt. She had no money to pay the debt and feared that her husband would be imprisoned for a long time. Santo Ivo heard her story and then went to the prison to visit the man. He found him sick and hungry and realized he needed medical care and proper food. Saint Ivo paid the man's debt and arranged for his release. He also provided medicine and food and helped him to his feet. The man was grateful to Saint Ivo and became his disciple, dedicating his life to helping the poor and needy.
Dear Saint Ivo, we thank you for your example of love and compassion. You showed us how to care for those less fortunate and uphold fairness and justice. On this day, we ask for your intercession and pray for guidance in our own lives. Help us to follow your example and be kind, generous and humble. Give us strength to overcome our weaknesses and love each other as you loved us. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
