Saint Martha is known as the patron saint of hospitality and the provider of practical help to those in need. Her commemorative day is on July 29th, and her story and prayer inspire many people to live a life of service and compassion.
Once upon a time, there was a woman named Martha who lived in a village near Jerusalem. She was known for her kindness and generosity, and her home was always open to anyone who needed a meal or a place to stay. One day, Martha received word that her dear friend Jesus was coming to visit her and her siblings, Mary and Lazarus.
Excited to welcome Jesus into her home, Martha set about preparing a feast fit for a king. She swept the floors, cleaned the dishes, and made sure that everything was perfect for Jesus and his disciples. However, as the hours passed and Jesus had not yet arrived, Martha began to feel anxious and overwhelmed.
Meanwhile, her sister Mary sat at the feet of Jesus, listening to his every word and enjoying his company. Martha became frustrated, feeling that Mary should be helping her with the preparations. She went to Jesus and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me."
Jesus replied, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things, but only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her."
Martha was humbled by Jesus' words and realized that her focus on serving had caused her to miss out on the most important thing - spending time with Jesus and listening to his teachings.
From that day on, Martha continued to serve others with her hospitality, but she also made time to sit at the feet of Jesus and learn from him. She became known as a devoted follower of Christ, and her example inspired many others to serve with love and compassion.
Prayer to Saint Martha:
Dear Saint Martha, you were a devoted follower of Jesus, and your example of hospitality and service inspires us to this day. Please intercede for us and ask God to give us the strength to serve others with love and compassion. Help us to remember that the most important thing is to sit at the feet of Jesus and learn from him, and to put our trust in him in all things. Amen.
